The Industrial Revolution and Society

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, transformed not only the economic landscape but also the social structure of Western societies. Before industrialization, most people lived in rural areas and worked in agriculture. The introduction of steam-powered machines and factory systems caused millions to migrate from villages to growing urban centers in search of employment.

This migration created unprecedented challenges. Cities like Manchester and Birmingham swelled rapidly, often without adequate housing, sanitation, or infrastructure. Workers, including women and children, labored long hours in dangerous conditions for low wages. However, the period also produced significant innovations: the steam engine, railroad, and telegraph revolutionized transportation and communication, gradually improving living standards over the following decades.

Some emphasize the immediate hardships endured by working-class families, while others highlight the long-term benefits: rising literacy rates, expanded political rights, and eventual labor protections.
